Events, festivals, attractions all add spice to the culture of Bandhavgarh. Rajasthani cuisine, traditions, festivals and events describes the culture of Bharatpur since it is the ‘Eastern Gateway of Rajasthan’. Brij Festival is an event of color similar to Holi is celebrated in Bharatpur. Bandhavgarh forest around it had been maintained as a game preserve or Shikargarh of the Maharajas of Rewa. After Rewa merged with Madhya Pradesh Bandhavgarh came under jurisdiction but the hunting rights remained with just the Maharajas of Rewa. Bandhavgarh Fort is a famous tourist attraction which was once ruled by many rulers since 2000 years. According to the legends the fort was built by Lord Rama which was controlled by his brother Lakshmana till the time he reached and the place got its name. The ‘Eastern Gateway of Rajasthan’, Bharatpur was founded by Maharaj Suraj Mal which was once an indestructible well fortified city and then became the region of Mewar. Bharatpur town used to be flooded every monsoon in ancient times and thus Ajan Dam was constructed to control flood and Bharatpur Lake was formed. Deeg, Dholpur and Bharatpur played a vital role in the history of Rajasthan. Laxman, brother of Lord Rama is worshipped as the only family deity of Bharatpur and the place was named after the name of King Bharat. As we all know many of India’s parks have been developed from the hunting preserves but Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary is the only place where the environment has been created by a king.
